An Audio View of (L)TEX Documents — Part II
نویسنده
چکیده
ASTER — Audio System For Technical Readings — is a computing system that produces audio renderings from the same (L)TEX source used to produce the printed document. Raman (1992) described our preliminary work on this project. At the time, correct handling of user-defined (L)TEX macros was described as one of the key issues in building a fully extensible audio rendering system. ASTER (Raman, 1994) has now been fully implemented. This paper reports on the approach used in ASTER to handle user-defined macros. The approach used not only makes ASTER fully extensible; it points out a unique advantage of (L)TEX — the ability of the author to encode semantic meaning into the markup by extending the document model in ways appropriate to the specific document instance that is being encoded.

An Audio View of (LA)TEX Documents
Till now, (LA)TEX has been used to generate typeset documents. This paper points out an alternative view—the generation of audio renderings. The (LA)TEX typesetting source captures a lot of document structure which is then used to typeset the document. This can be exploited to convey document structure in audio renderings of the document as well. This becomes especially important when dealing w...
متن کاملDirect and reverse synchronization with SyncTEX
We present a new technology named SyncTEX used to synchronize between the TEX input and the output. 1 What is synchronization? Creating documents with the TEX typesetting system often requires two windows, one for entering the text, the other one for viewing the resulting output. In general, documents are too long to fit in the visible frame of a window on screen, and what is really visible is ...
متن کاملDocuments Mean More than Just Paper! 1
With the advent of electronic documents, information is available in more than just its visual form |electronic information is display-independent. Though the principal mode of display is still visual, we can now produce alternative renderings of this information |we have designed a computing system, ASTER, that produces an audio view. The visual mode of communication is characterized by the sp...
متن کاملDocuments Are Not Just for Printing
Modern use has emphasized the written/printed nature of documents to the extent that today documents imply writing on paper. This trend is well reeected by document processing systems that can produce high quality paper output. The world of electronic documents currently abounds with a plethora of markup languages, document encodings and typesetting systems designed to facilitate the production...
متن کاملAnother Look at L A TEX to SGML Conversion
Publishers are starting to use SGML as their permanent form of storage for documents. How can LTEX files be converted to an SGML instance? This paper discusses possible strategies, and describes an implementation by Elsevier Science of a system based on conversion in TEX itself, and extraction of SGML code from the dvi file.
